When applying to colleges, how do fine/visual, film, performing and other arts students determine their level mastery level compared to others in order to select which schools they have a shot at? It probably differs depending upon the specific type of arts. What indicators did you (or your kids) use to determine where you fit compared to peers and which schools make sense in terms of achievement level and talent. Like for dancing as an example, how did you determine if Juilliard or Brockport were targets or reaches? I guess Juillard would be a reach for anyone but how do you know if Brockport is also a reach? Same for music or fine arts. I guess with fine arts you can enter shows and see where your piece stands. With academic majors it seems far easier to determine what level of school makes the most sense and which are likely acceptances or not. But how do those in the arts do it? What did you use as indicators? Was it successful for those of you already enrolled?
