I got accepted to the Chicago College of Performing Arts (Roosevelt University) for Jazz & Contempoary music. Is it a good music program? Is it hard to get into?

Contemporary Vocal Performance AND Music Business Programs

Looking for some help targeting College Music programs for my soon to be High School Junior daughter. She's got dreams of being a "rock / pop star" and I support her but also want her to have a realistic outlook and practical approach to the music business. I'm her biggest cheerleader and she's got some talent but I know many times success in music is "who you know", "what's hot at the moment", and "do you have the right look", more than talent. So I'd like a program that will give her the business side of the business to promote her music or help her get an industry job if she doesn't get her "big break". We've got some time but wanted to research programs that are equally weighted in vocal performance AND music business. We live in Connecticut and are open to programs anywhere but her preferences are big cities on the east or west coast - open to UK or Canada too. So far she's an honor roll student (3.5 GPA) and will be taking a couple AP courses this fall. She's been accepted and will be attending a Performing Arts Magnet program next year, has taken some guitar and begun vocal coaching. She's attended summer workshops at Berklee, SUNY Purchase and Hartford Stage over the past 2 summers. We're looking to start visiting schools this year. I'm being an optimist about finding the best school for her regardless of cost but am worried about that. Doubtful we'll qualify for need-based aid and as her Dad - fighting for visitation and custody to get her on this path to support her dream has eaten eaten away my savings. Dream schools are: - Berklee - NYU - USC - Thorton - Miami - Drexel - Yale - on Dad's list just because... Looking into: - College of Saint Rose - Full Sail - really like the success their graduates have had but not sure about vocal performance aspect or the real world reputation (read stories about accreditation issues) - Memphis - Cal State Northridge - University of Hartford - Georgia State - Belmont - Kennesaw State Thanks for any thoughts!

Does anyone have experience with Tufts/NEC Dual Degree Program?

My D has been accepted to this program. She would study VP at NEC and Anthropology at Tufts. She has tried to find students in the program to talk to, but the contacts forwarded to her by Tufts have not panned out (one transferred to the Harvard/NEC program, etc.). We've read all the background information we can find on CC and she will be talking to NEC when she re-visits, but does anyone have personal knowledge of the program's strengths or weaknesses or know a student who has done it? Thanks in advance.

Does anybody know when IU Jacobs School of Music will notify students of their studio assignment, particularly in piano? It is very hard to make a commitment if the teacher is unknown.

I have two great offers. McNair scholarship at South Carolina and an incredibly generous merit offer from SMU. I know both are great choices. But it is so hard to decide. In terms of finance, my out of pocket will be similar at both. Any thoughts from students/parents from either music schools or universities?

Hey guys, I applied to UMichigan's music major (specifically Performing Arts Technology major). I have my interview this Friday, but I have NO IDEA what's it gonna be about. I think the faculties won't ask me to answer some musical knowledge related questions.. but I still want to prepare for it. So if any of you guys took U of M's music major interview, can you plz tell me your experience? What kind of questions did you get? Also, does anyone know how influential an interview is for the admission?

music ed or VP question

I am trying to help my daughter focus on an undergraduate degree as she will be a junior this September. At first she wanted to be a VP major and still does but her long-term goal is to teach and have her own studio though she loves performing. She has been taking piano and voice for man years. She wants to perfect her instrument and is concerned if she does do music ed even with a vocal/choral emphasis, she will not get the extensive training in voice that she would as a VP major. There are a couple of universities that allow one to double major in performance and music education but others do not. Some don't have music ed as an undergraduate degree. If she were to get accepted into a school as a VP major, would it be difficult for her to get accepted into a music ed masters program and visa versa with vocal performance? I was told by one university that masters in music ed programs prefer to accept those with undergraduate degrees in music ed. I am just wondering if those who take music ed with a vocal emphasis also have juries, take French, German and Italian diction and are able to audition for Operas? Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Merit-based Aid

Don't know if I should ask this question on this board. Has anyone appealed for more (music) merit-based aid and was successful? My total cost of attending my top choice school is about $7 K more than my second choice. I was wondering if it would be worth it to ask for more merit-based aid from my top choice school so that it will be more affordable. Any suggestions on how to go about it?

Indiana vs. CIM vs. UMich

Hello, I am having a hard time deciding between these schools. Would anyone be able to provide info about the general atmosphere and level of student musicianship at these schools, specifically for the violin program, as well as how demanding G.E. requirements are, do-ability of minoring/majoring in other fields, etc? I was also wait-listed at Eastman, so information about Eastman would be helpful as well. Thank you!!

Highly recommended but no merit-based aid

Has this ever happened to anyone? A friend of mine auditioned at a top school and was told by one of the faculties that he auditioned very well, etc. Well, the letter arrived and instead of offering a generous aid or just something, it said that while he is "very highly recommended" by the faculty, they are not able to make an offer at this time. What about those students who were not so highly recommend? What were they offered, a negative amount?! Could this be a message that the school don't want my friend (very highly recommend) to attend this school?

B.A. in music vs. B.M.

Hi, I'm an incoming senior in high school, and I'm thinking to study music in college. I've done quite a substantial amount in piano (studied for 10 years, gotten scholarships, performed with orchestras, etc. etc.) so I feel that I am qualified for a music degree in college. However, I come from Whitney High School which is one of the top academic schools in the nation. Music isn't really a priority there and because of this, I feel like I haven't been able to put in as much time as some of the other students intending to major in music at college. My unweighted GPA is around 3.7, I've taken a few AP's, 30 on the ACT...my academic record isn't impressive, but I don't think it's too bad. My question is, for someone like me, do you think I would have a higher chance getting into, say USC, applying as a BA in music or a BM? Do you know the difference in the admission process for a BA in music student vs. a BM? Thanks.

Opera and French Horn

This is my first post, so bear with me if someone has already answered my questions elsewhere. My daughter is a junior in high school whose dream is to get both a vocal performance major and a performance major in french horn. She is very good at both (I have been told). My first question - is this possible anywhere? We've visited St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where she learned that it really isn't feasible there. We were told that nobody has ever done it, essentially meaning no. Second question - we are already looking into Indiana University and Lawrence University, but what other colleges should we be looking into? She's got a 3.9 GPA and a 33 on her ACT, so she can academically get into just about anywhere she wants to go, but we aren't even sure where to start, except for the local choice, St. Olaf College. We are hoping for academic and arts scholarships to help with the cost, since we don't have a ton stored up for college and she has a twin brother going, too. Her main requirements are that the school have a good opera program and a specific french horn professor, not just a brass professor. Even if she has to choose one, she won't quit doing the other. She's currently taking private lessons in both. We are on the fence in regards to conservatory vs. liberal arts schools. She wants to be hear an urban area, since she was told by her french horn instructor that you can get gigs to help pay for school if you are near a larger city. Size so far is open I'd prefer midwest, around Minnesota, but realize that may not be the best so we are looking all over the place. Suggestions?

Math Tutor -- at BUTI (Tanglewood)

My daughter will be at BUTI for 8 weeks this summer. I just received a letter from the magnet program she'll be attending next year suggesting that she attend a two-day enrichment course for "those students specifically entering the advanced pathway of IB-Pre-Calculus." Of course, the dates conflict with when she'll be gone. I'm wondering if I might be able to connect her with a math-y older student who would be able to help her with the materials. (Assuming I'll be able to get the course materials from the coordinator.) I don't expect her to have a lot of trouble, but I was thinking that some kind of tutor/mentor would be great because A. I'm not much help if she gets stuck, and B. long-distance nagging isn't likely to be pleasant or effective. Specifics ... She's currently taking non-magnet Algebra 2 (magnet Algebra 2 is not offered to 8th graders... don't get me started about the logic of busing 4 very bright 8th graders to high school to sit in a classroom full of 10th and 11th graders with average math aptitude). The letter says "Freshmen entering IB Pre-Calculus frequently find the transition difficult because their exposure to certain Math topics -- Trigonometry, Statistics, and Functions -- is limited." The instructional time involved is just a few hours, so I don't imagine they're expecting the kids to understand Trig in great depth. Any ideas for finding a suitable tutor? Feel free to PM for my email address if you know someone who might be interested in tutoring her.

Hopkins/Peabody vs. Northwestern

So, results are finally in for me; I narrowed it down to these two double degree programs for performance and an academic discipline. I'm having the time of my life deciding between the two!! I'm sure that Hopkins/Peabody is the better choice musically (I got my first choice studio), but the program is really difficult...kids im the program are so bright and hard-working, and I'm not really sure if I can keep up. Even though I am at a very competitive public high school, I'm afraid that Hopkins/Peabody might stretch me too far. I'm not really interested in Hopkins if not for this program, so dropping may not be a possibility. On the other hand, there are far more double degrees at NU, and it seems significantly more do-able. I know that they're making improvements in my instrument programme that sound extremely promising, but I just don't think I'll get the musical rigor that I would get out of a conservatory education at Peabody. The other thing is that I've been warned by a very important mentor of mine about the musical caliber of Peabody...she said that I'd be much happier at other schools that I'm not considering with weaker academics and stronger musical programs. But, she also said that Hopkins was a great school! Conflicting Any thoughts? I'm going to visit both and take lessons, I think
