So, auditions are done, and now the waiting begins. But here is something that D and I wonder. If one is really interested in a particular college/conservatory, and if one thinks that the audition at that particular place went well, is there anything that one can do to indicate strong interest? Or is it inappropriate to contact the school/teacher following the audition?

Berklee 5 week summer 2017 participants
An older Berklee thread had been revived with some parents of kids attending the 5 week performance program this coming summer so I thought I would start a new thread for kids attending and parents of kids attending the 5 week. Or anyone considering attending. There has been a lot of discussion from people who either have attended and can answer questions as well as those like me that have a D who attended a shorter program last summer and plans to attend the 5 week this summer.
Jump on the thread if you are part of the upcoming Berklee 5 week group, student or parent. My D is a singer/songwriter and jazz vocalist. She plays guitar, piano and uke. She did the Berklee Stage Performance workshop last summer. She is a junior in HS and plans to audition for admission at the end of the 5 week.
For any parents of registered attendees that are interested in starting a FB parent group send me a pm and let me know and I'll see if Berklee will set one up. The kids have a closed FB group they have been invited to. It might be fun to have a meet up in Boston at the beginning of the 5 week, the end or both. :-)

Curtis VP?
I'm a senior in high school, applying to many different vocal performance programs. I'd really like a sort of "week in the life of" snapshot of a VP major at Curtis. I heard somewhere that they send their VP students up to the Met? I can't seem to find anything that isn't a rumor or waaayyy outdated
Thanks!

How much should I be spending on a viola?
I am feeling a little flustered here. It sounds like I need to be spending $10,000+. I guess we can squeeze it out, but it will be a hardship for us. Basically, it will have to come out of the money we saved for her college, so she better get good scholarships if we do this.
My husband keeps asking why we need to spend this much money for her instrument, before she ever even gets in. Our daughter keeps telling us she won't have a chance at getting in, if she does not have a "conservatory grade" instrument.
Help!

Should I even major in Music?? (Need Help! ASAP!)
Hello,
Im 17 years old and English isn't my first language so forgive me for my terrible grammar. In a few months I'll graduate from my high school, and I'm really confused at what major I should take.
I've been playing the piano since I was 6 years old, but I was never serious about it until only recently. Back then I would only practice once or twice every TWO weeks, so my progress was very, very slow. Truth be told, I wasn't interested in piano when I was younger because I've always find it difficult. Last two years, I finally realized how enjoyable playing the piano is, but I thought that it's too late for me. My sight-reading skill is below average, I'm not one of those people who have exceptional ears and solfeggio skill, I have bad hand-eye coordination - I don't even know what made me even consider taking Music as my major.
I've heard how tough it is for someone to major in Music, and I'm petrified that :
1. I am unqualified to major in Music
2. If I'm accepted in a Music College / University - I would not be able to catch up with my peers
3. Ultimately never graduating out of college
4. Quit piano altogether (worst case scenario)
I passed ABRSM Grade 5 with a distinction a few months ago, now I'm trying to study ABRSM Grade 4 theory so I can take the Grade 6 exam this year. I practice only around an hour or two every day (or sometimes every two or three days, which I know isn't enough).
What do you think? Is Music Major for me? What should I do to improve myself? Is what I have currently enough or should I study piano as hard as I can for a year or two for me to actually be accepted? Your help is very much appreciated
(Edit : It'd be great to hear your opinions even though you haven't major in music. I'll take any help and advice I can get right now...I'm really stressed out..the entrance test for a college I'm aiming for is only months away..Thank you!)

Musicians and Parents - Introduce yourself!
I don't know if this will work, but sometimes when I'm reading a post, I'm wishing I could remember more about the poster - parent or student? Performance? Music Ed? What instrument? I thought it might be nice if we could have a quick point of reference. Hopefully, you will all jump in and help keep this thread toward the front. I'll go first:
Parent (Mom), S is horn performance major at Juilliard, D is HS senior, violinist, looking to either minor or continue as avocation - not sure where.

LAC's in Northeast with Vocal Jazz majors
My D is a junior who wants to major in vocal jazz performance. We are looking at conservatories and LAC's, leaning more toward LAC's. So far, we have visited the following LAC's: Ithaca, Purchase, UMass Amherst, and New Paltz. We will also probably visit Towson and Temple. Maybe see William Patterson, but D thinks it's too close. Also saw New School Jazz and contemporary for their 5 year liberal arts/jazz degree. For those of you with experience, am I missing any Northeast LAC's with jazz vocal majors? Any feedback on these schools, and other advice on the process is welcome!

Summer Camp Recommendation for HS Freshman.
Hello.
I am a high school freshman. I have gone to the intermediate 3-week camp at Interlochen Fine Arts Camp in Northern Michigan, as a piano major. I am looking for a similar camp, which is more challenging, but not as much as the 6-week high-school track at Interlochen. If anyone has gone to such a camp, please recommend.

Less Merit Aid for Music Kids?
Do some universities tend to give less merit aid to music school students versus students enrolled in other programs (assuming equivalent GPA's and test scores)? For one college, my child got significantly less merit aid than several other students who had applied to non-music schools within the university. These kids had slightly lower test scores and significantly lower GPA's.

Piano performance, Ithaca, Potsdam or Fredonia??
My daughter has been accepted to Ithaca, Potsdam and Fredonia. Still waiting to hear from Boston University. She will be studying piano performance. Originally thought she would do double major of piano performance and music ed but has changed her mind because thinks it may be too hard and really her love is for performing not teaching. Can anyone give me some insight as to which school is better for performance? I know Potsdam and Fredonia are well regarded for their music ed program, what about performance? Ithaca, which she loves, is significantly more expensive than Crane and Fredonia, as those are state schools for us. However, if Ithaca is a significantly better school for performance major, the money may be worth it? Any insight or thoughts are appreciated. Thank you!

GoForth Journal
S, HS junior, continues his jazz bass musician path.
We have experienced sort of a transition of focus. Efforts in the past have pertained to the capabilities of S himself. Discovering the ways to prioritize and address technique, repertoire, practice routine, and other habits and characteristics. With an outlook of 1 year until audition season, it seems like executing the plans that are now in place will be alright. Whether or not this satisfaction with the plan indicates that the path is laid out perfectly, there is now more time to redirect attention from S to the colleges where he would like to study. More time is now available to learn exactly which schools start to accept application on which dates and how this can lead to auditions in which months. More time to learn who are the teachers at each place and how they are regarded. More time to lay out plans for college visits over (our, not their) spring breaks.
In this spirit, S went on his first official college tour this week with a sample lesson, a chat with music admissions, and even being invited impromptu into a practice room to try out a song on the bass with a small group. S was very satisfied with what he saw of the college lifestyle.

survey - Skype lessons
Hello,
How many of you have taken - or have considered taking - private lessons via Skype or other video-conference?
For those who have taken long-distance video lessons, how did you find your teacher?
For those who haven't, if you were considering taking video lessons from someone in another city, how would you go about searching for a teacher?
Curious to hear any experiences you may have had.
Thanks.

The Selection Algorithm
At first, I thought we would wait until all offers were in, and then we would execute a selection process from among all the complete (acceptance plus scholarships) offers.
However, with 2 complete packages received (even with 3 more expected to come), it seems like it is actually the perfect time to conduct a critical comparison between those two, and then eliminate one of them right away, even before other complete offers arrive. Then, when another arrives, conduct another critical comparison between those two.
What is your process?

Talent based awards
This might sound like a rather basic question but if someone decides to decline a school and a therefore any talent award... Do most schools offer that money to the next person in line or does it just go back into a common fund?

Which Summer Music Program to choose? Brevard, Idyllwild, Stanford?
Our 16 year old daughter double bassist went to Brevard Music Institute last summer and loved it - it really lit a fire under her and she now wants to be a professional musician. This year she got into Brevard again (waitlisted at Tanglewood) but I'm wondering if she shouldn't try something that has both symphony and jazz? (she loves and plays both). I heard that Stanford has a great (but pricey) jazz program - and Idyllwild also has a jazz 2 week program and a 2 week symphony program (where a Colburn instructor that she likes teaches). So - my question is: Is the Idyllwild Symphony program to the same level as Brevard? What about the Stanford Jazz summer Institute? Any others she should look at?
To further complicate things - she is looking for a full-time residential program for next year (we live in SC and she doesn't have access to any good bass instructors) - she is considering UNCSA, Idyllwild and Colburn Community Program - again, if possible, to play both classical and jazz. Any thoughts on these?
Money is a bit limited - are these programs really important for her to get into a good conservatory?

University of Cincinnati--CCM--commercial music production--feedback?
Hello All,
I'm new to these threads and trying to comb through lots of discussions to help with the same dilemma many of you are: My S is a commercial music/guitar player. He has been accepted to Belmont School of Music--commercial music/guitar and CCM commercial music program. He is still awaiting notification from Berklee (he auditioned in mid-February). We expect to hear merit decisions from all by April 1st (Belmont will be earlier).
He did the 5-week program at Berklee 2 years ago (loved it) and he has musician friends who are at Belmont (they also love it). BUT he has little insider info on the CCM commercial music production.
Does anyone know anything about the CCM program from experience or reputation? As you can probably tell from my screen name--this music world is completely new/foreign to me. My S's passion is music and he wants a life in the music industry.

"Required" Music for Auditions question
DD (current sophomore) is investigating several music programs & their audition requirements. Some of the programs have very generalized lists, while others have micro-specific lists. There are a couple "outliers" on her interest-list that have some very specific pieces listed as audition requirements. Those songs are not on her long-term plan at the moment, but relatively similar (in difficulty and length) pieces by the same composer are. As these are very long pieces to be memorized, she's not up to learning, memorizing, and perfecting several lengthy songs within the next year+ for each, individual program.
So - the question - how strict are the programs usually in regards to audition pieces? IF she doesn't have "This Certain Piece" completed, does she just not bother to apply, or should she still apply, but with her "Similar But Not Exact" piece?
Also - do the audition requirements often change within a program (where one year, it's required to audition with A, B, and C... and the following year, it's X, Y, and Z)?
