Hello. I have learned a lot from previous posts and really appreciate your readiness to share your experiences and advice!
My question is regarding summer programs for HS students focusing on music composition, mainly classical. My son is a HS junior with ~ 1 year composition experience (and has played piano for ~7 years). He participated in the Illinois Wesleyan Univ summer music composition institute last year and greatly enjoyed it. It was a perfect introduction well-suited for a range of students, and we would recommend it to others. He is already eagerly looking ahead to next summer and is hoping to do something a bit more intensive and a bit longer (ideal would be 2 weeks). Right now the programs that seem to fit those constraints are:
High School Composition Intensive at Berklee/Boston Conservatory
Lamont Summer Academy (composition major)
Clevelend Institute of Music, young composers program (though one week only)
Any feedback on those programs? The others that looked possible focused primarily on performance with an option to be involved with composition, OR were either too long (for him) or too expensive (for us) or appeared to be for the truly advanced composition student. But perhaps I've missed other good ones we should also consider?
Though we are on the west coast, traveling east is certainly do-able.
Thanks so much for any comments or suggestions.

Mannes invitation
Mannes emailed me saying pre screen result will be released before Christmas for vocal performance, but there were no news. I waited and called them on 3rd of January, they said result will be released by the 6th, but I did not received anything. I've seen there are many who are invited for live audition at Mannes. Can anyone help me out? What's going on? And also, if anyone knows when does University of Hosuton release pre screen results? I called them too and they said results will be released by the 6th, but I got nothing from them. Thanks!

Looking ahead for musician son in HS
First post in the music major forum. My son is a sophomore in HS and is an accomplished percussionist. He is not sure yet whether he wants to major or minor in music.
Any advice that would be helpful at this point in his education? How should be prepare? Is it worthwhile to take AP Music Theory? What else should he be doing? At this point, this is what he has done:
HS accelerated band
HS wind ensemble (by audition)
HS symphonic orchestra (by audition)
Private youth percussion ensemble directed by well-known percussionist (by audition)
All-Region band (4th chair freshman year; second chair sophomore year; highest score in the state on sight-reading)
All-State band -- audition (by invitation) upcoming
One-week percussion camp at a local college
Musicianship elective in school
Private instruction once/week
Any other suggestions? Thank you.

PhD Options - Education or History
Hey all,
First post under my current user name. I made a new Facebook account so I couldn't get into my old account, which was through my Facebook...
Anyway, I've recently realized that I'm interested in the history of music education as an academic subject. I'm currently halfway done with my master's program in music ed at Oberlin and my plan for now is to finish the degree and get a teaching job for next year no matter what comes next. That said, I've known I wanted to get a doctorate for a very long time so this post is not about whether I should pursue one, but rather what type of doctorate I should look at.
My question is - if one were to seriously consider academically studying the history of music education (in the United States), would it be better to look into a) a music education PhD and focus research/dissertation on historical music education or b) a music history/musicology PhD with a research focus on music education?
I've thought it through somewhat and I can see the merits to both. My undergraduate degree is in piano performance and pedagogy and my master's will be in instrumental music teaching so my guess is it would make me a little more unique to have "musicology" or "music history" as my next label, but I'd imagine that might take longer than a music ed PhD since I believe that would require me to also go through an MA in musicology in the process, at least depending on the school.
Thanks.

Good luck seniors and prospective grad students!
We are now into mid-January, and the main audition season is getting underway for our seniors and prospective grad students. My DS has 6 more college auditions in 4 states in 6 weeks, plus 3 concerts and 1-2 local auditions (not for college) during that 6-week window. I feel like we're at the top of the first hill of a roller coaster looking down at the bumpy ride to come.
Good luck to everyone -- I hope you have safe travels, good weather, good health, manageable stress levels and no instrument mishaps or missing luggage! Many thanks to the CC Music Major forum community for helping us get this far.

Ithaca College Audition Visit
I posted the question below on the parent page, and it was suggested to me that I post this on the music page as well. This question is aimed at anyone who might have knowledge of the town and be able to tell me how to get around town without a car! ....
I am sending my D to audition for the music program at Ithaca. I need advice on how to help her get from airport to hotel and to restaurants on her own. Everywhere else she is traveling has Uber or Lyft. Does anyone have experience trying to get around Ithaca using taxi services/shuttles? She has to be there for two nights.

Liberal Arts Schools with strong classical percussion
My son is a junior. He is a percussionist, has been first chair in the H.S. Band since he was a freshman, he participates youth orchestra, made All State and I believe would love to have a career in an orchestra, however he realizes that this is an incredibly difficult feat for any instrument, but especially so for percussion due the the small number of positions in each, so he has decided against pursuing that path. Additionally, he acknowledges that he does not have the self discipline to practice the way that he should and has been amazed at how little has gotten him as far as it has; he knows that it will not continue that way forever. Obviously this is NOT the set of characteristics that makes for a performance major and he knows it. So... he has decided that he would like to pursue a career in optometry, but would like to stay immersed in percussion at college.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice with regard to how we should proceed? He has thought that maybe he could major in music and take the pre requisites for optometry during the summers or as his electives; I am just wondering if there are things we are not taking into consideration?? I understand that being at a school with a conservatory would not necessarily be helpful due to the competition and lack of access to the best percussion professors for lessons? If he chose a performance degree and got accepted into a conservatory, would he be able to take these pre-reqs or would the program be too demanding? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
We have a preliminary list but would really like to begin making some visits:
Bard
Boston University
NYU
Columbia
Gettysburg
Queens College
Johns Hopkins
Temple

Acceptance Rate after Audition
I am wondering if there is a general sense of how getting an audition translates into acceptance? Do music schools plan to accept most applicants they allow to audition (for ones that select students to audition)? Is it generally a 50% or 33% chance? I know it is school specific, but is there a general rule or trend that people have found from years of experience. As a side note, I searched the forum and couldn't find a similar discussion on this topic. If there is one, let me know and I will go there. Thanks

Berklee Five week Summer Program
Hey guys,
I am considering and most likely going to do the 5 week summer program (2013) because I feel like this will widen my skills (I play the violin and piano). I am currently 16 years old and would really like to go through with this but with the limited info. I can't really say that I am really that eager to go. I have done some research on the program but the information is really vague so it is leaving me with a lot of questions that I can't really find anywhere. I hope that somebody that has previously attended will give me some insight about the program and as well as answer my questions. I am planning on going to this five week program with a friend of mine so having the information is really appreciated. I found out about this pretty late so I couldn't do the "scholarships" that they had.
Here are the questions I have:
1) How much is the entire program all together (ticket to fly there, application/registration fee, etc.)?
2) Is it really worth it (money wise, skills, experience, etc.)?
3) How were the classes you attended?
4) How much spending money should I bring (you know...for emergencies)?
5) How much experience did you get out of it?
6) Where did you stay during the 5 weeks?
7) How do you apply for the program (sorry the site isn't really informative with these things)?
8) Should I bring my instrument (violin or piano(electric)) to the program?
9) Is it okay to go there with a limited amount of knowledge?
10) Will they have auditions as soon as I get there?
11) Should I prepare for the worst?

Planning on Audition Day
Hi,
I'm currently a high school senior that is ready to start auditioning fairly soon. Most of my auditions are early in the morning (between 9:00-10:30). How early should I plan to show up to those schools with registration, finding a practice room, etc. to account for?
Thanks!

should professors with DMA degrees be addressed as "Dr. _____" ?
should professors with DMA degrees be addressed as "Dr. _____" ? (fill in the black with the last name)
I find some of them to prefer just Mr. ___ or Ms. ___, while others insist on being called Dr. ____. It also depends on the location or purpose of the meetings. (in private or master classes, during recitals or other performances, chance meeting at airports or grocery stores... etc)
Then I also have heard from non-music doctors(PhDs or medical doctors) who insist that DMA "doctors" are not real doctors.... of course, there are also medical doctors with actual doctorate degrees in medicine who don't consider regular "doctor"(medical doctors) to be "doctors" in the academic sense...
so what's the consensus here? should DMA doctors be referred to as "Dr. ______" ? :)

Musicians and Parents - Introduce yourself!
I don't know if this will work, but sometimes when I'm reading a post, I'm wishing I could remember more about the poster - parent or student? Performance? Music Ed? What instrument? I thought it might be nice if we could have a quick point of reference. Hopefully, you will all jump in and help keep this thread toward the front. I'll go first:
Parent (Mom), S is horn performance major at Juilliard, D is HS senior, violinist, looking to either minor or continue as avocation - not sure where.

GoForth Journal
S, HS junior, continues his jazz bass musician path.
We have experienced sort of a transition of focus. Efforts in the past have pertained to the capabilities of S himself. Discovering the ways to prioritize and address technique, repertoire, practice routine, and other habits and characteristics. With an outlook of 1 year until audition season, it seems like executing the plans that are now in place will be alright. Whether or not this satisfaction with the plan indicates that the path is laid out perfectly, there is now more time to redirect attention from S to the colleges where he would like to study. More time is now available to learn exactly which schools start to accept application on which dates and how this can lead to auditions in which months. More time to learn who are the teachers at each place and how they are regarded. More time to lay out plans for college visits over (our, not their) spring breaks.
In this spirit, S went on his first official college tour this week with a sample lesson, a chat with music admissions, and even being invited impromptu into a practice room to try out a song on the bass with a small group. S was very satisfied with what he saw of the college lifestyle.

music comp interview - UT Austin
Hi, looking for advice. My son was invited to interview for music composition at UT Austin, meaning he passed the pre-screening process (yay!). Does anyone have any insight into what this means (is he likely to be admitted, or do they interview far more students than they will admit)? Also, what is the interview process like there? How should he prepare? We've read what's on the web site, but any additional info would be appreciated. My son wants to double major in music comp and computer science, and I see that they have a music comp professor with experience in both, so I am guessing that he will get some questions about his dual interests. We are also a little baffled about the process - we understand that he can only be admitted to one major as a freshman, and he listed CS first and music comp second, so frankly we were a little surprised that he got a music interview. He hasn't received a decision from CS yet. Tagging @compmom @SpiritManager as you both have been so helpful in the past. Thanks so much for any information!

Berklee 5 week summer 2017 participants
An older Berklee thread had been revived with some parents of kids attending the 5 week performance program this coming summer so I thought I would start a new thread for kids attending and parents of kids attending the 5 week. Or anyone considering attending. There has been a lot of discussion from people who either have attended and can answer questions as well as those like me that have a D who attended a shorter program last summer and plans to attend the 5 week this summer.
Jump on the thread if you are part of the upcoming Berklee 5 week group, student or parent. My D is a singer/songwriter and jazz vocalist. She plays guitar, piano and uke. She did the Berklee Stage Performance workshop last summer. She is a junior in HS and plans to audition for admission at the end of the 5 week.
For any parents of registered attendees that are interested in starting a FB parent group send me a pm and let me know and I'll see if Berklee will set one up. The kids have a closed FB group they have been invited to. It might be fun to have a meet up in Boston at the beginning of the 5 week, the end or both. :-)
